The Digital SAT tests 17 math topics across 44 questions in two math modules. Linear functions is the most common topic at 15% of the questions, while common math tricks and no solution & infinite solutions are the least common at under 1% each. Below is how often each topic appears, what each topic covers, and how to use that to decide what to study first.

What Math Topics Are on the Digital SAT?

A math topic is a category of question. It’s not the same as a College Board content domain.

The College Board sorts Digital SAT math into four content domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Those four domains are useful for describing the test, but they’re too broad to study from. A student who is told he is weak in Algebra still doesn’t know what to work on. Algebra covers linear functions, systems of equations, solving for a variable, and more, and a student can be strong in one and weak in another.

That’s why we categorize Digital SAT math into 17 topics instead of four domains. We built the categories by going through every math question on the practice tests released by the College Board and grouping the questions by what students actually have to know to answer them. Each of the 17 topics has its own lesson, practice problems, and video explanations.

The 17 topics still map back to the four College Board domains. Linear functions, combining like terms, and systems of equations fall under Algebra. Quadratic functions, functions, exponents, and exponential growth fall under Advanced Math. Data & probability, ratios & proportions, and percent fall under Problem-Solving and Data Analysis. Angles, circles, and trigonometry fall under Geometry and Trigonometry.

How Often Is Each Math Topic Tested on the Digital SAT?

The Digital SAT ends with two math modules containing 44 questions total. Some topics show up on almost every test and some show up rarely.

To find out how often each topic appears, we went through the ten full-length practice tests released by the College Board and categorized every math question into one of the 17 topics. The table below shows the overall percentage for each topic, the lowest and highest percentage on any single test, and roughly how many questions that works out to on a 44-question section.

The five most common topics make up about 56% of the math section. The five least common topics make up about 7%. That means a student who masters the top five topics has covered more than half of the math questions, while a student who spends the same time on the bottom five has covered about one question in fourteen.

Keep in mind that the minimum and maximum columns matter too. Transforming functions averages 2.6%, but on one test it was 7.4% and on another it didn’t appear at all. Linear functions never dropped below 13% on any test.

The 17 Digital SAT Math Topics

Here are the 17 math topics tested on the Digital SAT, in order of how often they appear.

1. Linear Functions

Linear functions is the most common math topic at 15% of the questions. Linear functions questions test students’ knowledge on the linear equation y = mx + b and how slope applies to rate of change and the y-intercept applies to the initial value.

2. Combining Like Terms & Solving Equations

Combining like terms & solving equations is the second most common topic at 11.7%. The topic combining like terms & solving equations includes combining like terms, simplifying expressions, finding equivalent expressions, and solving equations.

3. Angles, Polygons, & 3-D Shapes

Angles, polygons, & 3-D shapes appears on 10.4% of the questions. The topic angles, polygons & 3-D shapes includes angles, triangles, quadrilaterals (specifically parallelograms), spheres, cylinders, cones, and rectangular prisms. Rarely, there can be a question about regular hexagons, but that is really a question about equilateral triangles, since regular hexagons can be divided into six equilateral triangles. Questions can ask the measure of an angle, length of a side, height, volume, or density.

4. Quadratic Functions

Quadratic functions appears on 9.6% of the questions. The topic quadratic functions includes the forms of the quadratic function, zeros of the function, vertex of the function, and properties of the roots of the function.

5. Functions

Functions appears on 8.9% of the questions. Function questions typically ask students to evaluate a function using the equation, graph or table. Sometimes the question asks students to calculate the output, value of the function, and sometimes students are asked to calculate the input, normally the x-value or t-value (for time).

6. Data & Probability

Data & probability appears on 8.7% of the questions. The topic data & probability includes arithmetic mean, mode, median, range, standard deviation, probability, histograms and pie charts. Students are asked to interpret data from a chart and perform calculations related to the probability of an event occurring.

7. System of Equations

System of equations appears on 8.1% of the questions. The topic system of equations includes solving for a variable in a system of two equations with two variables, or identifying an equation that represents a mathematical relationship in a text.

8. Ratios & Proportions

Ratios & proportions appears on 5.7% of the questions. The topic ratios & proportions includes analyzing the relationship between quantities, determining how one value compares to another, and solving problems involving equivalent ratios. These questions often require students to simplify ratios, scale values up or down, and use cross-multiplication to find missing terms. Some complex questions give a ratio for lengths of a real item and a scaled version, then ask students to use that to calculate areas.

9. Exponential Growth/Decay

Exponential growth/decay appears on 5.6% of the questions. The topic exponential growth/decay includes analyzing the growth and decay functions, evaluating values based on time and rate of change, and identifying if a situation is an example of exponential change or not.

10. Circles

Circles appears on 3.5% of the questions. The topic circles includes the equation of a circle, (x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 =r^2; the area of a circle, A=\pi r^2; the circumference of a circle, X=2\pi r; and relationships between angles in a circle and corresponding sector or arc lengths.

11. Percent

Percent appears on 3.1% of the questions. Percent questions test students’ understanding of percentages by asking students to solve for the percent, part, or whole, given the other values. Complex percent questions include finding the original value before a percent increase or decrease.

12. Transforming Functions

Transforming functions appears on 2.6% of the questions. The topic transforming functions includes drawing mathematical conclusions about the values of a function after a transformation, such as a horizontal translation, vertical translation, dilation, or reflection.

13. Trigonometry

Trigonometry appears on 2.0% of the questions. The topic trigonometry includes knowledge of sine, cosine, and tangent in a right triangle or in similar triangles. More complex questions involve the relationship that sin A = cos (90-A), where A is an angle less than 90°.

14. Solving for a Variable in Terms of Others

Solving for a variable in terms of others appears on 1.9% of the questions. The topic solving for a variable in terms of others includes questions that ask students to solve for a specific variable in an equation or formula in terms of the other variables. Sometimes the questions only require one step, while complex ones require multiple steps including factoring out a variable.

15. Exponents

Exponents appears on 1.3% of the questions. The topic exponents asks students to simplify an expression by combining terms and combining exponents: adding exponents when multiplying terms with the same base, subtracting exponents when dividing terms with the same base, and multiplying exponents when one term with an exponent is raised to another exponent.

16. Common Math Tricks

Common math tricks appears on 0.9% of the questions. The topic common math tricks includes substituting values in for expressions, or adding equations together to get a final equation that the question is looking for, rather than solving for each variable. Many times common math tricks can be applied to a number of different question types on the test.

17. No Solution & Infinite Solutions

No solution & infinite solutions appears on 0.9% of the questions. The topic no solution & infinite solutions includes questions that ask students to determine what value a constant must have for a system of equations to have no solution or infinite solutions. This is common for a system including a linear equation and a quadratic equation, where students need to remember the rules about the discriminant in the quadratic formula.

How Should You Use Topic Frequency to Plan Your SAT Math Prep?

Knowing how often a topic appears isn’t enough on its own. A student who already answers every linear functions question correctly shouldn’t spend more time on linear functions, even though it’s the most common topic on the test.

The topics worth studying are the ones that are both common on the Digital SAT and weak for you. That’s two pieces of information, and the table above only gives you one of them. The steps below cover how to get the other one and how to build a study plan around both.

Start With a Diagnostic SAT

There are three reasons to start with a diagnostic test. First, it will introduce you to the format of the test. Second, it will give you a baseline score, so you know how much you need to improve to reach your target. Third, a good diagnostic test will tell you which math topics you need the most help with.

That third reason is the one that matters most for planning. Without it, you’re guessing.

Study the Highest-Frequency Topics You Are Weakest In

Once you have your diagnostic results, compare them against the table above.

A topic worth studying first is one that appears often on the test and that you’re missing questions on. A topic you’re already strong in isn’t worth studying, no matter how common it is. A topic you’re weak in that appears on 1% of the test isn’t worth much either.

Work down the list from there. After you study for a while, take another test and reassess. Some of your weaknesses may have become strengths, which changes what to study next.

Create a Schedule for Studying

Make sure that your practice fits into your schedule. A detailed schedule creates a routine and accountability. If you proactively set aside time to study with a plan, then you’re more likely to actually study.

It’s also a good idea to plan your test and your studying for a time of year when you don’t have a lot of other commitments, such as sports or AP exams.

Take Practice Tests and Reassess

Take more practice tests as you go. This gets you used to the pacing of the test and prepares you for the real thing. We have ten Digital SAT practice tests on our website.

After each test, assess your strengths and weaknesses again to determine what to study next.

Common Mistakes in Preparing for Digital SAT Math

Most problems in preparation come from effort, resources, and knowledge.

Not allocating enough time to prepare. It takes time and effort to raise your SAT scores. Based on the students we’ve worked with, improving 70 to 130 points normally takes around 40 hours of effective studying, and improving 130 to 250 points normally takes around 80 hours.

Not studying often enough. For tutoring, we recommend at least two sessions per week. That results in four days per week of studying, because students are assigned homework to do between sessions. If a student studies once per week or less, a full week goes by without reviewing what was just learned, and facts and strategies don’t get retained. It also takes too long to get through all of the material.

Studying with outdated material. There was a significant change in the content on the Digital SAT compared to the most recent version of the SAT. If a student uses older resources, he won’t study efficiently. Some of the material studied may not appear on the test, or it might be asked in a different way. For example, questions with imaginary numbers appeared on the old version of the test, but haven’t appeared on the Digital SAT.

Not practicing with the Desmos calculator. The Desmos calculator is built into the Bluebook application, so it’s available to students during the math modules.

Practicing With the Desmos Calculator

Desmos is a powerful calculator that can help students solve some math questions quickly. It helps eliminate manual mistakes and saves time.

Desmos helps most on linear functions, system of equations, and data & probability questions, where graphing an equation or reading a point off a graph is faster than doing the algebra. Students who wait until test day to try Desmos normally lose time figuring out the interface instead of saving time with it.
