Solving for a Variable in Terms of Others questions on the Digital SAT ask students to solve for a specific variable in an equation or formula in terms of the other variables. Sometimes the questions are relatively easy and only require one step, while complex ones require multiple steps, including factoring out a variable. Solving for a variable in terms of another questions appear on approximately 1.9% of the Digital SAT. Solving for a variable in terms of another falls under Advanced Math according to the College Board. Try our sample of 5 practice questions with video explanations.

Combining Like Terms & Solving Equations

Solving for a variable in terms of another requires students to use many of the same skills needed to solve equations. In these questions, students may need to move terms from one side of the equation to the other, use inverse operations, and combine like terms. Since the answer may contain more than one variable, students need to be especially careful with each step. Therefore, mastering combining like terms and solving equations can help students answer these more advanced algebra questions.

System of Equations

Systems of equations are related to solving for a variable in terms of another because students often need to rearrange one equation before substituting it into another. For example, a student may solve one equation for y in terms of x and then use that expression in the second equation. This skill can make system of equations questions easier to solve. Therefore, practicing systems of equations can help students better understand how to solve for one variable in terms of another.   Try more SAT practice questions here.
