Modifier questions ask students to choose the answer that correctly connects descriptive information to the word or phrase being described. Students need to avoid dangling modifiers and misplaced modifiers. Modifier questions appear on approximately 1.5% of the Digital SAT Reading & Writing section. These questions fall under Standard English Conventions according to the College Board categories.

What Do Modifier Questions Look Like?
When the answer choices change drastically, they are most likely modifier questions.
For example:
- Spider-Man first appeared in comics in 1962, in Marvel Comics’ Amazing Fantasy #15
- 1962 was the first time Spider-Man made an appearance in any comic. He appeared in Marvel Comics’ Amazing Fantasy #15
- Spider-Man’s first appearance was in Marvel Comics’ Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962
- Marvel Comics’ Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962 marked the first appearance of Spider-Man
How to Answer Modifier Questions Correctly
After looking at the answer choices and identifying that the question is a modifier question, identify if it is specifically a dangling modifier or a misplaced modifier.
What is a Dangling Modifier?
The object that is being modified should be near the modifier. If a modifier is used as an introductory phrase, the object being modified has to come right after the comma.
Example:
Having a knack for writing, the book written by George Martin was a huge success.
This is incorrect because “Having a knack for writing” can only describe a person, but the noun after the comma following the modifier is “the book”.
A correct way to write the sentence would be:
Having a knack for writing, George Martin wrote a book that was a huge success.
What is a Misplaced Modifier?
Misplaced modifiers can occur anywhere in the sentence. As a rule, modifiers should be close to the objects they is modifying.
Example:
The man walked his dog wearing a tuxedo.
This incorrectly suggests that the dog was wearing the tuxedo.
A correct way to write the sentence would be:
The man wearing a tuxedo walked his dog.
Example
After studying how prairie grasses survive long periods without rain, ________. The findings helped botanists understand why some native plants recover quickly after droughts.
Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?
A) droughts were shown to affect some plants less severely than others
B) botanists identified several features that help the plants conserve water
C) several native plants recovered quickly after dry seasons
D) the roots of prairie grasses extended deep into the soil

Answer: B
The modifier “After studying how prairie grasses survive long periods without rain” must describe the noun that immediately follows it.
- A) Incorrect. This suggests droughts studied how prairie grasses survive.
- B) Correct. Botanists are the ones who logically could study prairie grasses.
- C) Incorrect. This suggests several native plants studied how prairie grasses survive.
- D) Incorrect. This suggests the roots studied how prairie grasses survive.
