SAT Prep Classes in Staten Island: 8 Students, In Person, 100-Point Guarantee

Our in-person SAT prep classes meet at our Oakwood office on Staten Island. Each class is 24 hours of instruction across four weeks, with four full-length practice tests and printed materials, capped at eight students.

If your score doesn’t go up 100 points, you retake the entire class for free.

Where the Class Meets

Classes are held at our office in the Oakwood neighborhood of Staten Island.

Most of our students come from across the South Shore and Mid-Island, including Oakwood, New Dorp, Great Kills, Eltingville, Annadale, Tottenville, and Grasmere. We also have students from the North Shore and from Brooklyn.

Street parking is available. For students taking public transportation, the S57 bus stops nearby, and the Staten Island Railway is within walking distance.

Caddell Prep has been in Oakwood since 2012, and Glyn Caddell has been tutoring Staten Island students since 2008.

Why 8 Students Matters

Every class here is capped at eight students. Other tutoring centers on Staten Island run SAT classes with up to 30.

Eight is the number where an instructor still knows every student’s name and notices when one of them is lost. In a class of thirty, a student who doesn’t understand something can sit quietly and stay behind for the whole four weeks. In a class of eight, the instructor sees it in the first session.

Small classes also mean students actually ask questions. A student who won’t raise his hand in front of twenty-nine classmates will ask in front of seven.

That matters more on the SAT than it does in a school subject. A student has one shot at the score and no chance to make it up next semester.

Who Teaches the Class

Large test prep companies hire instructors and hand them a script written by someone in another department. The person teaching your student may have no connection to whoever built the course.

Every instructor here is trained by Glyn Caddell on the curriculum he built. He went through every practice test the College Board has released, categorized every question into 32 specific topics, measured how often each one appears, and wrote the lessons in that order. He also wrote Digital SAT Math Secrets, which every student in the class receives.

That means the lessons are the same lessons regardless of which instructor teaches a section. Same curriculum, same training, same method.

Glyn is a graduate of Staten Island Technical High School and the founding president of its alumni association. He grew up taking these tests in this borough and has been teaching students here since 2008.

Staten Island SAT Prep Class Schedule

Classes meet three times per week for four weeks, leading up to a specific SAT test date.

  • Sundays, 9am to 12pm. Full-length practice test.
  • Mondays, 6pm to 9pm. Lesson.
  • Wednesdays, 6pm to 9pm. Lesson.

The Sunday session is a full practice test every week, which is worth knowing before enrolling. Four Sundays in a row are committed.

Every class is $1,299, or $1,099 with early registration. Every class is capped at 8 students and carries the 100-point score increase guarantee.

Why Some Students Do Better in a Classroom

Some students focus better with other people physically present. Being in a room with seven others working the same problem creates a pressure to keep up that nothing else replicates.

There’s also the screen question. A student who has already spent a full school day looking at a screen normally has less left for a three-hour session on another one. Sitting in a room is a different kind of tired.

The instructor sees more too. He notices the student who has stopped writing, or who looks lost, or who is about to ask something and doesn’t. Those are the moments where a class either catches a student or loses him.

A parent normally knows which kind of student he has.

Is the In-Person Class Right for Your Student?

A class works for a student who needs a schedule and an instructor. Self-paced material doesn’t help a student who won’t open it.

In person works if the commute is realistic. Three sessions a week for four weeks is twelve trips, and one of them is every Sunday morning. For families on the South Shore that’s straightforward. For families further out it’s worth thinking through before enrolling rather than after.

24 hours of instruction across 8 lessons, 4 full-length practice tests, and all materials.

Materials are printed. Every student receives physical books, including Digital SAT Math Secrets, with space to write directly in them. Practice tests are on paper. A lot of students work better on paper than on a screen, and the books go home with the student at the end of the class.

Before enrolling, it’s worth knowing where the points are going.

A free diagnostic SAT gives a student an accurate score based on College Board scoring, plus a breakdown of which of the 32 topics are costing him the most points. It’s also the baseline the 100-point guarantee is measured against.

The diagnostic can be taken at our Oakwood office or online. There’s no charge either way.

Where exactly is the office?

Is there parking?

Yes. Metered street parking is available in front of the office.

How do students get there by public transportation?

What should a student bring?

A pencil, a calculator if he has one he likes, and the books we give him. Everything else is provided. We also recommend bringing your own device, such as a laptop or tablet, for practice tests.

Are the books physical or digital?

Physical. Students receive printed books they can write in and take home.

What if my child misses a class?

Classes are not made up. Because sections are capped at eight students and each class leads up to a specific test date, we can’t add sessions once a class has started.

If you know in advance that your student will miss a session, tell us before registering and we’ll work out whether the class is the right fit or whether tutoring would serve him better.

Do you run classes at any schools directly?

Yes. We run an SAT prep class at Staten Island Technical High School for its students, and we have run SHSAT classes at junior high schools including IS 34. If you’d like us to teach a class at your school, ask your principal or parent coordinator to get in touch.
