SAT tutoring at Caddell Prep is 1-on-1 instruction in person at our Oakwood office, in packages from 12 to 48 hours. Sessions are built around a diagnostic test, so the topics are decided before the first hour is spent.
Packages are not section-specific. A student can use the hours for math, for reading and writing, or for both, and change the split as his results change.

What an In-Person Tutoring Session Looks Like
The tutor sits with the student and they work problems together on paper.
That last part matters more than it sounds. A tutor watching a student work can see the hesitation before anything gets written. He can see which step the pencil stops at. That’s faster than asking a student to explain where he got stuck, because most students can’t say. They know they’re lost. They don’t know where they lost it.
Students also work on paper here, which is how they’ll take the practice tests and how many of them do their best thinking.
Homework is assigned between sessions, and practice tests run throughout so we can see whether the sessions are still on the right topics. A student’s weakest topics change as he improves, and the plan changes with them.
Why Some Students Do Better in the Room Than Online
Some students find it easier to admit they’re confused sitting next to someone than on a video call. That’s not true of every student, but it’s true of enough of them to matter.
Some don’t stay present on a screen after a full school day already spent on screens. An hour in a room is a different kind of tired.
And a student who is easily distracted has fewer places to go when the tutor is sitting beside him. A parent normally knows whether that describes his child.
Scheduling
Sessions are scheduled around the student rather than around a class calendar. That’s the main advantage of tutoring over a class, in either format.
Sessions need to be booked a day in advance. If something comes up and you need one sooner, call the office and we’ll try to fit it in the same day. Sessions can be cancelled or rescheduled up to two hours beforehand.
Then there’s the travel. A family in Oakwood or New Dorp loses ten minutes each way. A family further out should count the round trip into the hour before committing to a 48-hour package, because 48 sessions is 48 round trips.
A session you can’t drive to still happens. A student scheduled in person who can’t get to the office on a given day takes that session online instead, with the same tutor at the same time. Not a rescheduled session and not a different tutor. The same session, delivered differently.
That’s worth knowing before choosing a format. If you can get to the office, in person keeps both options open.
Who Does the Tutoring
Every tutor at Caddell Prep is trained by Glyn Caddell on the curriculum he built.
He went through every practice test the College Board has released, categorized every question into 32 specific topics, measured how often each one appears, and wrote the lessons in that order. He also wrote Digital SAT Math Secrets, which our students use for practice between sessions.
That means the method is the same whichever tutor a student works with. Same training, same categorization, same approach to a question.
Glyn is a graduate of Staten Island Technical High School and the founding president of its alumni association. He has been tutoring students in this borough since 2008, and Caddell Prep has been in Oakwood since 2012.

Most of our students come from across the South Shore and Mid-Island, including Oakwood, New Dorp, Great Kills, Eltingville, Annadale, Tottenville, and Grasmere. We also work with students from the North Shore and from Brooklyn.
Is In-Person Tutoring Right for Your Child?
Two things have to be true.
Tutoring is the right format for a student who needs specific topics rather than full coverage of the test. A student who is behind across the board normally gets more from a class, at a lower cost per hour.
In person is the right delivery if the travel is realistic and your child works better beside someone than on a screen.

That list is what the sessions get built around. Without it, the first few paid hours go to finding out what could have been known beforehand.
