The SHSAT is scored on a scaled curve that varies slightly from test to test. The scoring is determined after the test is taken, similar to the SAT. The number of points awarded for each correct answer is not constant. For example, the difference between 25 correct and 26 correct is approximately 3 points and the different between 50 correct and 51 correct is approximately 8 points.
Each section of the SHSAT, ELA and math, is scored separately and then added together to create a total score, similar to the SAT.
SHSAT Score Calculator
Scoring on the SHSAT can be confusing because cut-off scores are given as scaled scores. Many students don’t know where they stand after taking a practice test, so we made an SHSAT Score Calculator to help you out.
Simply enter the number of correct answers you got on the English section and the number of correct answers you got on the math section, and we’ll give you your estimated scaled score for each section and your total score.

The table below should be used to estimate scaled scores of each section on practice tests.
Each section of the SHSAT has 57 questions. Use the scoring table below to estimate your scaled score for each section, then add the two scores together to get your total score.
Note: On the actual test, 10 out of the 57 questions in each section are field questions (they do not count). Therefore, the actual scaling should be based on 47 questions. However, for students and parents preparing for the SHSAT, a scaled score based on 47 questions is useless since students will give their best shot on all 57 questions, and we do not know which 10 questions to ignore.

SHSAT Prep Advice Based on Scoring
Based on the scoring of the SHSAT, it is advantageous for students to master the subject they are already good at: ELA or math. As mentioned above, the difference between 25 correct and 26 correct is approximately 3 points and the different between 50 correct and 51 correct is approximately 8 points. A student can raise his score a lot by getting more questions correct on a subject that he is already getting a lot correct on since each additional correct answer is worth significantly more points.
How to Prepare for the SHSAT
Students who plan on taking the SHSAT should start with a diagnostic test. Our diagnostic test has very detailed breakdown of skills, so students can know exactly what they need to work on. For students who want to improve their strengths, this is very helpful. For students that want to know how to prepare for the SHSAT, the first steps are taking a practice test that offers this detailed feedback. A student who scores high on the math section, for example, should look at topics with the most wrong answer because this is the biggest area to improve. If the student had the most wrong answers in ratio & proportion questions, the student can make a big score jump by mastering that topic.
