The cost of SAT prep varies wildly as there are many different ways to prepare for the SAT. It can range from free for self-studying or after-school programs up to tens of thousands of dollars when some experts charge close to a thousand dollars per hour for 1-on-1 tutoring.

To get specific answers, only the popular test prep companies are considered: Kaplan, Princeton Review, Prep Scholar, Revolution Prep, Prep Expert, and Caddell Prep.

Prep courses typically provide a lower hourly rate than tutoring, but tutoring provides one-on-one attention.

Is SAT Prep Worth It's Cost?

Yes, SAT prep is worth it’s cost for students who can benefit from a higher SAT score. If getting a higher score can mean getting into a specific college or receiving a partial or full scholarship, then SAT prep is worth the cost. Getting professional help provides structure and insights that students would lack if they prepared on their own. However, if a student can already score high enough on the SAT on their own based on a diagnostic test, then there’s no need for SAT prep. Some parents of students with high scores on their diagnostic tests will still opt for some SAT prep just so the students feel more confident going into the test.
