Tips for SAT Students

The most important thing a student can do is take a realistic practice SAT with a detailed assessment that shows a student exactly what topics to focus on to improve his score. It could be a waste of time to study all topics, so identifying which topics will improve your score the most will maximize the student’s time and effort.

Every student needs a goal to work towards. The goal could be to increase a certain number of points or to reach a specific score. Having a goal to work towards helps provide motivation to study hard and practice.

With a goal in mind, students can assess their work after a practice test and know if they are on track to reaching their goal. Maybe they are doing well or maybe they need to dedicate more time to studying.

The only way to improve is to practice, and the more you want to improve on the SAT, the more you’ll have to practice.

For students wanting to improve 70 points, 24 hours of practice may be enough. However, 24 hours of practice is likely not enough if you want to improve 150 points on the SAT.

If you want to improve, you have to commit to practicing.

Some geometry formulas are given on the SAT, such as area of a triangle and volume of a cone. However, there are some formulas that students get tested on that aren’t provided. For example, the quadratic formula and the equation of a circle are two formulas that are not provided on the SAT reference table but are normally required to know for the test.

Even though some formulas a re provided, it is best for students to memorize all of the formulas required for the test. Having the formulas memorized will help students apply the concepts more quickly. Not only will time be saved by not flipping through the pages, but students can more easily develop their plan for solving a problem if they can recall the formulas from memory.

Caddell Prep's 3 Rules for Success

Treat Every Practice Problem as Seriously as You'd Treat a Test Question

On a real test, you won’t skip a question; you’d work hard to try and get the right answer.  It’s important to treat practice questions the same way. Struggling is important for learning. Even if you don’t get the right answer, the explanation will make more sense since you already thought through the questions.

Don't Get Discouraged by Mistakes; Learn From Them

Much less than 1% of students who take the SAT get a perfect score. That means close to 100% of students aren’t going to get a perfect score, so all students are going to get something wrong. Don’t get discouraged when you get something wrong. Tutors are here to help you. You’re pretty much guaranteed that the other students are getting SAT questions wrong too, so don’t get discouraged or be embarrassed. Learn from your mistakes.

Don't Make Excuses

Students have busy schedules. Some students have sports, clubs, work or all of the above. It is difficult to make time for tutoring and studying. However, excuses don’t help anyone. When it’s all said and done, the only thing you’ll have to show for your SAT prep is your SAT score. It won’t matter if you give your tutor an excuse or not. You have to work hard to reach your SAT goal.
