Students take the SHSAT in fall of 8th grade, but starting much earlier is a good idea. It makes sense to start in the 7th grade or earlier. Take advantage of the summer before 8th grade. Students should also study during the summers, between 6th and 7th grade and even between 5th and 6th grade. Knowledge loss over summer break is a common problem for many students. Doing work during the summer, specifically for the SHSAT gives students a leg up over the competition.

FAQ About Our SHSAT Prep the SHSAT

English Language Arts and Mathematics. Note that the English Language Arts part consists of Revising/Editing and Reading Comprehension.

No, a calculator is not permitted on the SHSAT.

For the SHSAT, it is best to start as early as possible. The SHSAT is a very difficult test and each student only has one chance to take it during 8th grade. There is another chance to take it as a freshman in high school, but there are less seats available in the specialized high school.

There is no formula sheet. However, some questions may provide a formula.

Students are competing for available seats, so the score changes year to year. After the tests are graded, the students are ranked and placed into schools based on their rank and preferences for schools. On average, we have found that around an 85 is necessary to gain access to a specialized high school. However, because of the way the SHSAT is scored, a simple percentage is not accurate.

According to the department of education, over 30,000 students take the SHSAT every year. However, that shouldn’t discourage you! 30,000 students take the test, but that doesn’t mean that they are prepared for the test. They might not have the grades you have or put in the work necessary to ace the SHSAT. If you study for the test, you can separate yourself from those other students.

SHSAT Lessons & Practice Problems

After taking a diagnostic test, work your way through lessons and then the practice problems to put your knowledge to the test. We will track your progress on each SHSAT topic as you finish tests, lessons and practice problems. Your assessment is constantly updated so you can identify your strengths and weaknesses.

SHSAT Math Practice

We go further than just breaking down math into 4 topics (Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Analysis & Probability). We break down the categorize the math questions into 21 topics and provide lessons and math practice questions specifically for increasing your ability in each of those topics.

SHSAT Verbal Practice

The verbal section of the SHSAT includes Revising.Editing and Reading Comprehension. We break down those two large topics into much smaller categories with associated lessons and practice problems. We will help you focus on the topics that offer the greatest opportunity for improvement.

3 Full-Length SHSAT Practice Tests

Get ready for the big day by taking practice SHSAT exams. Try to complete the test in one sitting, just like the real test. Use the practice tests to monitor your progress and identify your weaknesses.
